Eye Exam

At Frith and Laird Optometrists, we are early adopters in technology and constantly invest in having the best equipment available to offer the highest standard of care.

We have the latest equipment to accurately diagnose and monitor eye conditions. Our specialty equipment includes:

  • Comprehensive Eye Examinations
Our eye examinations take time! We allow 45 minutes to assess your visual needs and perform primary eye health checks. There are some eye diseases that may sneak up on you without any symptoms and early detection is the best form of treatment. It’s more than just glasses.
  • Medical Optometry- Ocular Diseases and Ocular Medications Prescriber
Our therapeutic optometrists have additional training where they can diagnose and prescribe both eye drops and tablet medications to treat a range of eye conditions from allergies, infections, inflammations, glaucoma and other red eyes just like your GP.
  • Children’s and Behavioural Vision
Kids are fun! And their eye test should be too. With a range of child-specific testing, our practice has built a reputation for catering to children’s eyes. We look beyond just clarity of vision and carry out an expanded area of eye testing called behavioural optometry. In addition to the standard eye testing, we go deeper into the visual processes involved with reading and learning. Most problems with seeing close or distance objects can be corrected with spectacles. However some individuals may still struggle with visual tasks such as reading despite have excellent clarity of vision. A behavioural eye examination begins with our standard comprehensive eye testing but goes on to include investigations into the speed and accuracy of eye movements, spatial awareness and visual memory. As a result of testing, the optometrist may prescribe spectacles, offer eye exercises or advise on visual tasks and games that may assist in correcting or developing visual-cognitive function. A children's subsidy is available up to $338.50 annually for those up to the age of 15 if you have a valid community services card.
  • Contact Lenses
Contact lenses gives you freedom and is a great option for sport, work or just having fun. Disposable soft contact lenses are available as daily, fortnightly or monthly replacements. We also fit speciality contact lenses including for keratoconus and orthokeratology (ortho-k). A government contact lens subsidy is available. Contact us to see if you qualify.
  • Colour Vision Assessment
People who are colour blind are unable to see colours the same way that most people with normal colour vision do. They typically have trouble separating certain shades of colour (usually between red and green). Colour blindness is usually inherited and affect more men than women. We have nine specific colour vision tests and we can do a complete work-up to tell you what colour vision problem you have and give you any recommendations including specially designed spectacle lenses and contact lesnes for colour blindness.
  • Dilated Fundus Examinations
If indicated, we may instil eyedrops into the eyes as apart of the examination to dilate your pupil. Your pupil is the small hole at the front of the eye and by dilating (making it bigger) the pupil it allows us to have a more detailed view of the eye where we can detect signs of diabetes, high blood pressure, glaucoma, macula degeneration and more.
  • Dry Eye
Dry eyes is a common condition affecting many people. Common complaints include pain, a burning sensation, irritation and grittiness. Causes of dry eyes can be due to a lack of tears in the eye, your current medications and even the environment. We have multiple tests we can perform to assess the severity of your dry eyes and give you a tailored treatment plan. Click here to learn more about dry eyes.
  • Low Vision
Low vision doesn’t mean you have to stop the activities you enjoy. We have a large range of Schweizer and Eschenbach magnification aids. Solutions for work include CCTV, Scan & Read, and computer software. Visit our low vision friendly page here to find out more on low vision

We can perform the visual examination as part of your seafearer licensing. Our practice is also only one of two in Auckland accredited by Maritime NZ to the conduct the specific maritime (Holmes Wright B) lantern colour vision test. Click here to learn more about the maritime assessments.
  • Specialised Testing
And there’s more! During the eye examination, the optometrist may find that you require additional tests such as visual field testing, optical coherence tomography (OCT) and digital retinal imaging.
  • Clinical Studies
We actively collaborate with researchers at the University of Auckland and other institutions. Frith and Laird is often used as a satellite clinic for various clinical studies.
